How to Check-in with Yourself to See If You’re Living Your Best Life

We’ve all had times when we need to sense check where we’re at in life.

It’s easy to get swept up in the day-to-day and forget to check in with ourselves to see if we’re fulfilling our dreams and needs. Adulting unconsciously often means we’re settling for a life rather than creating the life of our dreams.

As the infamous Persian poet, Rumi says, “Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray”.

When you need to check in with yourself, here’s the low down:

1. Careers should ignite your soul…

… well, most of the time anyway. So many of us stick with careers and jobs because we’ve invested so much time in them or it’s not the right time to make a change because of this reason or that. Can you say that you wake up excited most days (excluding weekends!)?

If you can truly say that you’re happy with your career or job – that’s brilliant. You’re inspiring change and we’re grateful for folks like you that can be an example for the rest of us.

For the rest of us… we’ve got some work to do!

2. Get in touch with yourself

Spend some time alone to re-learn your Self. Figuring out our purpose in life can be a lifelong process so you can forget about the clock too – it ceases to exist when it comes to life goals like this.

Try exploring things you like, perhaps a new hobby or take on a passion project, try new foods and experiences. It’s a great way to learn about who you are now and see if the ‘new’ thing is something you actually like or if your response to it is something that comes from habit versus how you’re expected to react.

3. Pay attention

Our mind, body and soul always give us signs. Paying attention to our intuition and heart space, and learning to read our own cues will lead us down the path of least resistance. This allows us to stay in tune with what we love and leads us to what feels good to us.

It can be different for each of us. Personally, I’ve noticed that when I feel something in my heart space it’s always pure intentioned, true and aligned with my Self. My gut however, is another story altogether… when I feel something in my stomach it can be either a flight or fight reaction or something that connects with my heart space. This is why it’s important to get in touch with ourselves and pay attention to our cues.

4. Trust yourself

Remove the weighty presence of doubt by learning to trust yourself to follow the path that’s right for you. This will come naturally, as you work on the points listed above and build your self-respect.

Start small when rebuilding the relationship with your Self and Trust. Make one promise to your Self and keep it, then keep on going and eventually, you’ll trust your Self enough to create your dream life.

5. See love over past conditioning

Assess if your life; your relationship, career, mental, financial, physical or emotional circumstance feels true to your nature, or, is this a result of your mind protecting you from past pains? Treating each experience as new allows us to stay present and free from judgement and prejudice.

It’s worth doing a check in with yourself once a year, if not more frequently depending on where you’re at in your journey.

Gradually letting go of accrued habits, programs and behaviours from our past experiences, allows us to create new beliefs and behaviours as we re-connect with ourselves to live our best life - the life we all deserve to live.
